One in five resident adults from Kealba and surrounding suburbs have a common disorder known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Other names are ‘irritable bowel’, ‘irritable colon’ or ‘spastic colon.’

You may have experienced these signs and symptoms of IBS:
abdominal cramping
bloating and gas
diarrhea
constipation
The good news is, IBS isn’t life-threatening, and it doesn’t cause inflammation or increase
your risk of colorectal cancer. It can, however, be quite uncomfortable and even embarrassing.

It’s not clear what causes IBS, but I find that a combination of digestive dysfunction coupled with nervous system sensitivity, usually are big contributing factors in IBS.

Chances are your doctor will prescribe fiber supplements to help move any blockage through
your digestive system.

A savvy physician will also prescribe probiotics. These are the ‘good’ bacteria that normally
live in your intestines. Good bacteria help crowd out disease causing ‘bad bacteria’ by
generally making conditions unfavorable for them.

Fiber and probiotics, together help yield a healthier person.

Good bacteria help reduce the production of toxic and cancer-causing compounds in the
intestinal tract. This makes you healthier and the nutrient exchange within your digestive
tract more efficient.

The good bacteria actually manufacture short chain fatty acids (SCFA), which make the
colon slightly acidic. This acidic environment helps kill the bad bacteria. SCFA also directly
feeds the cells in the intestines and keeps them healthy. This is especially critical for people
with ongoing digestive tract problems.

If you suffer from any digestive tract problem, the smart move is to flush your system twice a year
and take a good quality probiotic. Just like checking the batteries in the smoke detectors, I start
my biannual internal cleaning in Autumn and Spring, in conjunction with Daylight Savings Time.
