LOW TESTOSTERONE

I see a lot of women in my clinic with a fair amount of health issues and generally by working together, we get a pretty good resolution with their symptoms and get them into wellness. What gets me is when I ask them about their husbands or partners, and enquire about their health status, the answer I mostly get is…..”ahhhh…. my man…..he is all sausage no sizzle.”

After I pick myself up off the floor from laughter, I ask them to be more specific and the same symptoms are conveyed. They are overweight, tired, have no motivation, no sex drive, can’t sleep or if they do they snore the house down, they have gut problems, depressed, and they are on the verge of having high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels. They don’t want to go to the doctor because they “soldier on”, let alone go and see a Naturopath because in their eyes only hippies and girls go to them.

C’mon guys ….WAKE UP! It’s time to take control and I’m here to help you. Does it have to take a stroke or a cardiovascular episode (that’s a heart attack dumbo!) to change your ways? That’s if you are lucky to survive.

Now guys, listen up. Did you know the leading cause of death for Australian males is ischemic heart disease (17%), followed by lung cancer (6.8%), and strokes (6.4%). Did you also know men take their lives at four times the rate of women? That’s five men a day!

In my clinical experience of 18 years, a lot of these symptoms are related to LOW TESTOSTERONE and overall hormonal imbalances. I’m seeing young men with low testosterone and high estrogen levels….yes men do have estrogen hormones and an excess will inhibit the effects of testosterone and give you the dreaded “MAN BOOBS” and other metabolic effects and issues.

The likely cause is from environmental toxins and substances in plastic packaging and also from eating foods that increase estrogen. Let’s look at some of the symptoms caused by low testosterone and other hormonal imbalances.

  • Less drive and ambition
  • Exhaustion first thing in the morning
  • Tiredness by mid afternoon
  • Sleepiness after dinner
  • Less sex drive and sexual performance (all sausage no sizzle)
  • Muscle loss, weight gain
  • Irritability, moody, grumpy, sadness
  • No energy
  • Sleep disturbances

Heck these are all the symptoms my female clients complain about their husbands or partners and we are not talking about aged men. We are talking about men in their 30s and 40s.

So I want to appeal to all the men out there that are struggling. Let me help you put the sizzle back in the sausage! At Vital Health and Natural medicine, I use functional lab testing to measure hormones. Hormone balancing is a delicate process. You don’t want to simply take synthetic testosterone as an answer to raising low testosterone. Using synthetic Testosterone will stop a man’s own production of the hormone and result in shrunken testes….good luck with the sizzle if that happens!

Once we have a measured hormonal profile, we start on avoiding the following hormone disruptors:

  1. Exposure to toxins in the environment and food
  2. A diet high in sugar and starch
  3. A diet high in wrong fats
  4. Lack of sleep
  5. Lack of exercise
  6. Too few nutrients essential to testosterone production

Let’s take a look at these a bit more in detail.

  1. Avoiding/eliminating toxins include eating organic foods, using a water filter, using a shower filter and using fragrance free personal care products
  2. Studies have shown that consuming sugar suppresses testosterone and increases blood sugar levels. This will make you increase fat which in turn increases levels of the feminizing hormone estrogen. So lose weight people!
  3. Good fats – Omega 3s protect cell membranes allowing hormones to stay balanced whereas trans fats damage the cell membranes. Eating fish, taking a fish oil supplement, using olive oil in salad dressings all contribute to an intake of healthy fats. Get rid of the donuts, frozen packaged foods, breads, buns, cakes, biscuits and crackers, all contain unhealthy trans fats.
  4. Exercise is important whether you have hormonal imbalances or not. The effects exercise has is crucial for elevating Testosterone levels. Studies have shown weight training combined with cardio enhances testosterone in all ages. Circulation improves erectile dysfunction so guys, the sizzle comes back. It counteracts stress and it improves insulin sensitivity.
  5. Sleep is very important because lack of it slows down testosterone and growth hormone, which is important to keep you lean. If you are having sleep issues, a small amount of melatonin for a short time, can help to get you into a better sleep rhythm whilst you address other factors.
  6. The nutrients to boost testosterone:
  • Tribulus
  • Adrenal tonics
  • Fish oil
  • Vit D
  • CoQ10
  • Magnesium
  • Melatonin
  • DIM

Of course you wouldn’t just take supplements without the lifestyle changes, measuring the hormone levels and using the right dosages of nutrients in getting a healthy response.

So I want to help my fellow MAN. I want to get them up and about by taking responsibility, seeking the benefits of natural medicine to balance their hormones, get their sausage to sizzle and make their women happy once more.

It’s never too late. Call VITAL HEALTH AND NATURAL MEDICINE now on 9382 9790 and speak with Naturopath Domenic Pisanelli to see how he can help you!
